Project Synopsis

While taking classes at the American Animation Institute, I took a storyboarding class with the great Karl Gnass. This was one of the storyboarding projects I took on back then. I’m generally happy with the overall energy of how this one turned out. It was a wonderful way to get my fet wet and try to create a scenario and gags all my own.

STORYBOARDS

“Monkey & Balloon” came from my obsrevations of primates at the Los Angeles Zoo. They never seemed like they wanted to be there, and I always assumed one or two of them were scheming to get out. Finding a clever way for the monkey to escape was the best part of conceptualizing this piece. Looking back I can see plenty of things I’d change now, but I enjoy how the monkey gets out of the zoo, just not how he expected!

Project Synopsis

This was a storyboard project taken on as a class assignment. We were supposed to take an old folktale and interpret it in our own way. I chose a Natuve American folktale entitled “Coyote and Turkey,” about how Turkey outsmarts Coyote, who wants to eat her.

It was a great fun time learning from the great Karl Gnass, and an excellent foundational understanding of the art of storyboarding.

STORYBOARDS

Taking a small folktale and turning it into a larger story was a great exercise to get my mind and drawing hand wrapped around how to translate something from the page into visuals. My reimagining of Coyote as a trailer park bum and Old Turkey as a sweet old grandma was my first stint of inspiration. When I realized I wanted to tell a story that rhymed, like a children’s storybook, I realized I was in for an even deeper challenge!
